From Des Friedrich: Re Ella Hawthorne Volunteering In Senegal
Des explained that Ella an Optometrist (has worked for Judds for five years) was looking for financial assistance at very short notice to be managing the Ophthalmic team, helping to restore sight to children and adults who are blind due to cataracts, as well as other eye and vision related problems. An example of the work being done by the Ophthalmic team is included in this video about 4 year old Tresor who had surgery for bilateral congenital cataracts, dramatically improving his quality of life and ability to learn:

Des proposed that the $1600 recently given to The Trust be used to assist Ella as well as any money raised tonight at the cake auction Seconded Murray Gillespie
Several members spoke in support of the proposal as being worthy of our support given the voluntary nature of her mission(she is having to fund all personal costs involved) and the work she will be undertaking over a 6 month period.
Ella is currently President of The New Plymouth Young Professionals and has promised to provide to the club regular updates of her mission and address the club on return.
President Jan put the proposal and it was passed unanimously.
Mens Annual Cake Auction
Judges this year were Sally Morch and Judy Hanline
The theme was: "Time waits for no man"
No surprise that Owen McCluggage's cake was judged the best for the 5th year running!! Well done Owen. Two cakes and great detail.
Eight cakes were baked by the male members(although Stephen Bovett admitted he had bought a chocolate cake).
Most adhered to the theme although Murray Gillespie admitted that while his cake seemed to lack appropriate decoration that a lot of thought had gone into placing 2 snowmen on the cake because: "Time waits for 'Snow' men"!!!!
Wonderful auction conducted by Des Friedrich, over $700.00 raised(not bad for 8 cakes) which will be donated to Ella.
The highest bid on the night was $135.00 for Owen's cake of course!!!
Here are the other cakes and bakers.
