David did Part 1 of 2 family history

Davids paternal side of the family were Lebonese /Golan Heights.

His Grandfather Victor Abasania left there in 1894 as an 18 year old and came to New Zealand his elder brother gave him a gold watch and some money which enabled him to come. It was a case of starve or survive. He went up north to the Kauri lands to earn money, couldn't speak any English.

By the time he left the north he owned a jewellers shop, got married and changed his surname to Son of Brown (Brownson) which was the nearest english interpretation of his Lebanese name. The name change was essential to enable him to fit into NZ society.

He shifted to wellington and set up a jewellery shop on the corner of Manners and Boulcott St. The depression came and his shop was broken into, windows smashed. He left Wellington to go to Australia to get away from the bad influences of depression society.

Returning to New Zealand after the depression to Taumarunui then to New Plymouth, going 50/50 with a Habib in a Jewellers shop and then bought him out and established Brownson's Jewellers.

Can't wait for Part 2 of your very interesting Genealogy David.

Guest Speaker: Phil Quinney- Broadcaster/Auctioneer/ Councillor

Introduced by Stephen Bovett.

Phil led us on his life journey.

Phil is a born and bred Cantabrian who describes himself as his father's greatest mistake. Being the youngest (12 years younger than his oldest sibling) and an afterthought!

He didn't realise how parochial Cantabs are until he left there.

He was schooled at Aranui High School described it somewhat facetiously as "The Academy of Higher Learning"
Whose claim to fame was that in his time  a creche for the students was provided!!

On leaving school he ended up eventually in sole charge for National Insurance in Masterton which while he had a great deal of responsibility way beyond his level of maturity, insurance didn't suit him.

He stumbled into radio, always with an interest in broadcasting from a young age enjoyed home sports broadcasting which was almost an obsession particularly in the halcyon days of Speedway and Ivan Mauger.

He spent 4 weeks in Wellington training at the NZBC. after which 6-8 were elected to be posted to Radio Stations he went to Radio Carolyn in Timaru. Here he got a real feel for sports broadcasting with Larrie Williams and Mike Fraser. Apparently Mike was a real enthusiast often exaggerating Rugby games played at Fraser Park with weather and spectator numbers .
Mike at the end of one game commentated that the referee "looked at his whistle and blew his watch"

A memorable moment was his first live talk back show in Oamaru with David Lange in 1984 as his guest. Unfortunately the technology played up and he couldn't get listeners ringing in to communicate. Lange filled in the gaps as he could easily do and afterwards suggested that he was pressing the wrong buttons!!

he came to NP in 1987 to do the PM show however the breakfast announcer died at the age of 23. Gave him the opportunity to do the Hill (Hemi) and Phil show in 1988.
A highlight was doing an America's Cup live program in Whitianga after they won in Court with the Mercury Bay Yacht Club (Sir Michael Fay etc.)
Phil mentioned that there was a staff of 50 when he arrived in New Plymouth, 12 announcers. Today he is the only live on air announcer 7-9.00am on Saturdays with a sports show. The loss of local community broadcasting on a major network makes us more the poorer for it in his view.

He recalls memorably basketball /rugby(still does it) commentating. Recognising future stars such as Christian Cullen and Beaudy Barrett. The Keith Quinn and Phil Quinney sports show he did for a number of years.

He was made redundant at 50 which was a real blow. Led him into local body politics as a councillor for 4 terms  (3 under Mayor Peter Tennant, 1  under Harry Duynhoven) then got sick of rejection when he failed to get reelected by narrow margins.

Currently he is employed by Property Brokers as a Real Estate Agent and their auctioneer (almost full-time)around their 25 provincial branches in the North Island) and invites any of our members to make contact if they are contemplating selling their home.

In thanking Phil, Wally Garrett thanked him for his auctioneering skills at some of our golf tournaments. and congratulated him on his raconteuring skills and ability to engage his audience. A truly memorable address.

From President Jan:

Congratulations to Harry Duynhoven for his reelection to Council and for organising great guest speakers.

Heritage Taranaki Month (October)

Jan attended on October 6th a panel discussion which focussed on the broader definition of heritage; what is heritage, who has ownership over it, what are the consequences of decisions made, who do we entrust to make these decisions and how do these decisions resonate from our past into our present? The discussion invited audience participation.and attracted some excellent speakers and an audience of 350.
Des also attended and commented that this was to be held 2 years ago but Covid delayed it. Our club gave a commitment at the time to help sponsor the event. While the Club didn't have the money the Trust has honoured this commitment with $2000 being donated.
this was acknowledged at the event.
