3 Minute Speaker: Des Friedrich
Des spoke about What makes up a New Zealander.
He comes from a rich heritage on his mothers side his great great grandfather was the first Maori King, his great grandfather was Irish and helped to establish Maori horticulture as an exportable commodity.
His father had German, Scottish ancestry.
On his wife's Lu side she had Chinese, Samoan, English heritage.
His children, grand and great grandchildren ask how they describe themselves?
Kiwi's of course and this is what makes our heritage so fascinating now and why we need to embrace and celebrate our differences.
Guest Speaker: Mike Pillette, Model Aircraft
Introduced by Murray Gillespie.
Mike was born and raised in New Plymouth, schooled at Woodleigh, Highlands and NPBHS.
Born in 1954 he has lived a life of service.
He worked for a couple of years with Lands and Survey then went to Massey and trained as a Teacher.
Living opposite the Huatoki Domain gave him a wonderful childhood where he still maintains contacts with friends he grew up with.
Noel Baty was a teacher at Woodleigh whom he greatly admired and motivated him to become a teacher.
He's married with 4 children.
His first full-time teaching role was as principal sole charge Makahu School east of Stratford. He had a house built as a shell in Oakura and completely finished it off inside.
He wasn't happy with bringing up children in Oakura hence Makahu School for 5 years which were wonderful years mixing with the community that his children thank him for today.
He had 7 stressful years as Principal of Pungarehu School overseeing its amalgamation when Trevor Mallard was The Minister of Education.
Finally finishing up teaching at Fitzroy School as Deputy Principal retiring in 2020. Although he currently spends 3 days a week for Kiwi Kids Sports Trust doing the bike ready teaching programme for Waka Kotahi.
He's had a fascination for computers and computer games from a young age. He's in a clan called The Dogs of War-competing in an Aussie League, runs a game servers game name Biggles.
As a child he was always interested in model aircraft. he made his own Control line model deisel powered.
His early days of flying model aircraft required an AM licence at a set frequency issued by the Post Office.
Now days they operate at 2.4GHZ with no interference.
He's been 35 years in the Model Aircraft Club, last 5 years as president. They have 58 members operating from 2 sites with members ranging in age from 9 to 80+
The transmitter that he currently uses has 16 channels cost $600.00. Works within seeable range, the Yak 3 Russian Model ( photo below) is about 1/5th Scale has 7 servo's that operate, ailerons, flaps, rudder, retractable wheels and speed and direction control.
He describes his hobby as an extension of the social thing he loves just a different type of interaction. He has been competitive but not so much now.
Owen McCluggage thanked Mike for a very interesting wide ranging address and for taking time to talk to us on a public holiday.

Forest of Peace and Remembrance
Jan congratulated and thanked Des Friedrich for all the amazing effort and time he has put
into the project. This was recognised by other clubs at the recent Network Meeting.
Trailer Raffle
Jan mentioned that this had been discussed at The Network Meeting as a possible Network Project. She asked members where they were prepared to support the project about 10 said they would.
Trust Matters: Wally Garrett
Wally mentioned that The Trust provided a grant to Fletcher Moles who is representing NZ at Under 21 World Champs in Japan.
New Plymouth West Rotary Club
Jan indicated that the club has decided to hand its charter back by the end of the Calendar Year.
Social Night: Monday 3rd October from 5.30pm
This will be at President Jan's place
