3 Minute Talk: David Gibson
David's talk was about taking his 7 year old daughter snorkling at The Poor Nights Islands Marine Reserve which is 22km off Tutakaha near Whangarei.
The Marine Reserve was created in 1998 and now has a flourishing sea life. The Islands earliest inhabitants were Maori they left there in 1808.
David said that large snapper followed them round when they were diving making it a special experience.
He encouraged us to visit The Marine Reserve.

Forest of Peace and Remembrance;

Wally Garrett gave an update on Des's behalf.
Currently the project is about half way towards the target number of trees planted.
Many problems with weather, illness preventing more progress.

Message from President Sally

Greetings fellow Rotarians.

As this will be my last message to you as your president, I would like to thank you one and all for your support over the last two years.  It has been a privilege to serve you.  I look forward to many more years amongst you , first as your immediate past President and then as a member of this club.  I look forward to celebrating In three years time the centenary of the club.

I urge you to think about how we can increase our membership, asking maybe one person, that you know, who may be a worthy Rotarian, to join our club. As you all know we need to continue to serve our community and can only do that with a strengthened membership.

I wish Jan all the best on her upcoming year as your president and will be there to assist when needed.

Lastly a special thanks to all of those who have served on my board over the last two years.

Yours in Rotary

Sally

Guest Speaker: Carla Moore- Flourish

The Guest speaker for the night was Carla Moore.

The daughter of Russell and Jenny Moore,

She acknowledged Russell as a brave, cheeky, bolshy, wonderful father who passed away 8 years ago. Our Russell Moore Memorial Golf Tournament is a special day for her to remember Russell and she congratulated The Club for continuing to use it as the major annual fundraiser.

Carla is a graduate from Waikato University and gained a Masters Degree in Educational Pyschology  at Auckland University.

She had a brief period working in Auckland with families under stress, particularly in South Auckland which gave her a very valuable insight into an underprivileged community.

Having four children gave her a valuable insight into the importance of parenting which she has found very rewarding and has absolutely loved.

Flourish which is her brainchild, focuses on the importance of parenting support to enable families to  flourish through growth, connection and play.

They operate from the Tuson Stand at The New Plymouth Racecourse Monday to Friday. Providing the delivery of many and varied programmes for caregivers of children from 0-11.

Its not necessarily for broken  parents and recognises the importance of Dads.

Run entirely by volunteers with the collaboration of New Plymouth Service providers it involves Grandparents and a service for lost and lonely parents.

The programme has been supported by a TSB Good Stuff Grant (30K) NPDC ($20K) also The Toi Foundation funded a feasibility study.

In future the intention is to involve Public Health and divert attention of children away from Hospitals by providing support medical checks.

Flourish has a Board of ten members with a wide range of backgrounds relevant to its objectives.

Carla is obviously passionate about helping parents and we wish her well for the future.
