Harry spoke about the state of roads in Taranaki.

He spoke about his own personal experience of punctures and rim damage when hitting potholes on Mt Messenger and near Piopio
He had 3 explanation about the problems.

1.0 Different roadbuilding process, relatively flexible tarseal with poor base course structure and drainage leading to pot holes from ground water not being able to be drained off .

2.0 Money being diverted nationally to Roads of Nations Significance (Transmission Gully, Hamilton Bypass and Motorway to Auckland etc) leaving a smaller budget for other roading projects nationally.

3.0 Size and volume of trucks on the road.

Guest Speaker: Kim Marshall, Alzheimers Taranaki,
Community Advisor

Introduced by Owen McCluggage

Kim's family came to NZ from Ireland and England in the 70's.

She has spent 14 Years with Tui Ora and 3 years with Alzheimers Taranaki in her role as Community Advisor. Her primary role is to show how to live well with dementia and educate the Community about Dementia.

She doesn't have a clinical background, she takes a holistic view of things.

Alzheimers  Taranaki has 500 clients, 70 volunteers, 33 people on their Day Club Programme running 3 days a week, which provides social engagement for early and medium dementia clients.

They run a Wandertrack beacon service for people with dementia who are prone to wandering.

AT is staging a memory walk (for those dementia people that have passed) on the 18th September from East End to Puke Ariki.

They are currently building new premises at the site of the old Ngāmotu Tavern for a one stop Dementia Shop, be ready in a years time. (this has taken 5 years of planning)
Some funding comes from TDHB but they also rely on community bequests and donations.

AT has had 96 referrals in the last 6 months.

Approximately 60,000 kiwis have been diagnosed with dementia the most common of which  is Alzheimers disease (about 80%).

Its not proven to be a genetic disease.

The youngest client in Taranaki is aged 51.

To help prevention:

1.0 Be physically active
2.0 Have a healthy diet
3.0 Challenge your brain
4.0 Socialisation
5.0 Look after your heart
