Christmas Cake Auction

President Sally ran a very successful auction for all the cakes made by male members.
Each cake maker had to relate their experience to try and sell their cake.
Tony Bird's cake :A Lemon Meringue Cake was judged by Sally and Viv as the best cake.

$230.00 was raised in the auction and a raffle (Christmas Hamper) also raised $90.00.(won by Charlotte Gibson) The $320.00 total will be matched by The Trust with the same amount i.e.a total of $640.00 to be donated to The Food Bank.

Message from President Sally

Greetings everyone,

Thank you to all who were able to attend our partner’s night last Monday.  It was a great success with a goodly sum raised from the auction of cakes and the raffle to go to The Community Foodbank.  I also delivered a carboot full of groceries donated by members to the foodbank on Wednesday.  It was a pleasure to do this on behalf of our Club.

I also delivered a basket of goodies to Rebekah Smith at NPBHS as a thank you gift from our club.  Rebekah has been instrumental in helping communicate with the Interact club and co-ordinate the boys for the working bees at the reserve.  I also left with her a Rotary Christmas pudding for Nick, the gardener at the school, as he has attended most of the days there too.  This is over and beyond his job.  We appreciate the help both of them have given us.

Congratulations to Tony Bird for his winning cake on Monday night.  I can attest to the yumminess of this cake.  It lived up to its expectations.

Don’t forget to let Stephen know regarding numbers etc for Monday night’s social event at his place.

Yours in Rotary

Sally

Guest Speaker: Viv Baty- New Plymouth Theatre

Introduced by Sally Morch

Viv trained as a Kindergarten teacher in Dunedin.

She's been involved in New Plymouth theatre since 1962.

In that time she's  performed in 50 shows/plays and directed 8.

She's also an artist.

Her father ran the La Scala Restaurant.

In 1971 she was on the Operatic Society Committee Board that bought the Opera House for $80,000 when the council planned to demolish it. The male members of the Board at the time contributed $10,000 each and money was raised from various charitable sources.

Val who also ushers at the Opera House mentioned that there is a plaque commemorating the saving of the House in the foyer. Interestingly only the male members are acknowledged for their efforts to save it!

She commented that its a wonderful asset thats had several refurbishments over the years and with the addition of the downstairs theatre and entertaining areas is well patronised.

While there were several career highlights and many amusing incidents that happened on stage the highlight for her was being the Director of Oliver in 2005.

Michael Archer thanked Viv commenting that an appreciative audience is always the most rewarding part of performing and those present tonight were no exception.
