3 Minute Talk: Wally Garrett
talked about his  recent tip around the East Coast from Whakatane to Gisborne, Wairoa which was a repeat of one he'd done  26 years ago when unfortunately it rained the whole time. He thought the omens looked bad when they stopping for coffee at Te Kaha and it started to rain. Fortunately the rain stopped when they left the cafe and didn't rain for the 6 days of the trip.
There were many highlights including meeting a Taranaki couple  on the Tolaga Bay Wharf who live in the same street!

Trees for Peace and Rememberancee

Rob Maetzig gave an up date reporting that a beautiful piece of flat land on the western side of the Waiwhakaio and part of the new cemetery has been provided by the NPDC. The tree planting will provide a buffer for the cemetery as it grows.

2022 Your Virtual Rotary Conference

HOLD THE DATES – 8th and 9th April
Shaping our Future, Together

Join us for a Rotary Conference with a difference - you don’t need to leave home!
This year’s 9940 Conference, Shaping our Future, Together will be run solely online, coming to
your screens on the evening of Friday 8th
April and the morning of Saturday 9th April 2022. Your involvement is vital to our future. Please save the dates.

 Friday 8th April 2022, 6-8pm

Join us for the official welcome followed by a lively ‘Dragons Den’ debate with well-known
personalities, including Rotary Club of Wellington’s own honorary member, the Hon Grant
Robertson, Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Wellington Central.
Saturday 9th April 2022, 9am-12.30pm
A time to connect and discuss how we build a shared vision for Rotary in our District, we will
hear from our District Governor and an array of special guests from across community,
government, non-profit, and our own District Clubs.
Tailor your experience by choosing which of the informing and inspiring breakout sessions to
attend, virtually. Whether it’s service and fellowship which interest you, or membership, diversity
and inclusion, there will be something for everyone to learn, and be inspired.
The sessions will move quickly with generous breaks, and we fully expect your comments in the
breakout sessions to inform our approach to developing our future. The Conference will close at
12.30pm on Saturday 9th April.
And I’d like to issue my personal invitation to new Rotarians to attend our 2022 Rotary District
9940 Conference.
Registration details will follow shortly along with a list of speakers.
Meanwhile – lock in Friday night 8th of April and the morning of the 9th of April.
See you there!
Mark Wheeler
Governor
Guest Speaker: Grant Carter Taranaki Health Foundation

Introduced by : Mike Makein

Tom a Gastroenterologist is the Clinical Lead for the Taranaki Bowel Cancer Screening programme.
He emphasised the importance of early intervention and prevention of bowel cancer

He graduated from the Auckland medical school.
A Scholarship took him to UK eventually specialising in Gastroenterology. Coming back to New Zealand he practiced in The Hawkes Bay from 2014-2018.
His wife is also a Doctor from Taranaki which drew them to New Plymouth to raise their children.

He talked about new technology endoscopes using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect potential malignant polops in the bowel when doing colonoscopies. This uses algorithms able to distinguish these through visual comparisons with a high degree of accuracy compared to not having the technology.

Originally the Club (through the Golf Tournament and Network support with a District  Grant) was looking at potentially funding one of these ($33K) for the TDHB. Tom has since managed to convince Hospital management to purchase one.

However another suggestion was to purchase an enhancement to a Colonoscope (approx $13K) also using AI which enables a better means of allowing a colonoscope to negotiate loops in the colon to enhance patient comfort.
There are 2 operating rooms in the Hospital able to do these procedures but only one has this enhancement currently. The Hospital won't be funding the other as its not an essential item.

Great to see the Network support from other clubs present at the meeting interested in assisting any potential fundraising from our Golf Tournament.

Michael Archer in thanking Tom mentioned that the Latin for Bowel  botellus "small intestine," originally "sausage," diminutive of botulus "sausage,"
