3 Minute Speaker: Richard Handley

Richard spoke about how the township of Maxwell (On the border between Taranaki and Whanganui) lost its name.

Richard was born and raised in the area.

In the winter of 1868 Riwhi Titokowaru (Ngati Ruanui Chief) rebelled over land confiscation established a Fortified Pa at Nukumaru.

This led to settlers (including Richards ancestors) fleeing to Whanganui to The Rutland Stockade.

At the time the Pa was being built some Kai Iwi Cavalry (led by John Bryce a local farmer decided to attack the Handley's Woolshed where Maori were sheltering. 2 Maori children were killed and several others wounded. This became known as The Woolshed Incident

As a result 3 things happened.

1.0 Publicity hailing that this was a military victory appeared in The Whanganui Newspapers.

2.0 Two years after the invasion of Parihaka, G.W. Rusden published a three-volume History of New Zealand in which he outlined the brutal attack at Handley’s woolshed. He reported that Bryce and Sergeant G. Maxwell had dashed upon women and children and ‘cut them down gleefully and with ease.’ .Bryce took a civil case, suing Rusden for libel in the High Court in London. Bryce won his case on the basis that he personally had not carried out the killings and that no women were involved, as Rusden had claimed.

3.0 The naming of the township of Maxwell after Sergeant Maxwell

It was agreed in 1980's that the name of the town should be changed to Pakaraka on the basis that  it was inappropriate given the facts of The Incident, 40 years later 2 months ago to be exact the name change was formalised by the Whanganui District Council.

An amazing 3 minute talk Richard what a colourful history your family has had.

Guest Speaker: Milly Carr - Cherish Respite Care

Introduced by Mike Makein

Milly grew up in the Pungarehu area and always wanted to pursue a Nursing Career.
She graduated through the WITT Nursing School and practiced working from Neonatal to end of life care and everything in between. Working in Palliative Care for 9 years.

During that time she observed that there was a need for families to have respite care for those supporting families in their own home- Carer fatigue.

She decided to set up a privately run Cherish Respite Care and currently has a staff of 7(2 of which are nurses)

This is a service privately paid for by clients with no funding directly from other agencies.

Referrals can come from patients, General Practices etc.

She mentioned that its a privilege to go into people's homes, they can organise medical care if necessary, give families time off, improve their quality of life

It's a unique service in Taranaki.

Dennis Eales in thanking Milly, congratulated her for having the courage to set up a new service and taking the time to come and talk to us
