Message from President Sally

Greetings Fellow Rotarians,

A very interesting night on Monday when we heard from David Hill, a local author, welcomed Richard Handley into our club and had a brief visit from two rotarians, one from Drury and one from Whangarei, who are visiting New Plymouth with the Targa Rally.

On Monday and Thursday some members worked out at the Forest of Peace and Remembrance, helping children from schools at Kaimata(Monday) and Egmont Village(Thursday), plant trees and cooking and serving sausages when they had finished their mahi(work). An interesting anecdote was reported back to us.  When asked, by the teacher on their way back in the bus, what trees they planted, one student said, “Rotatrees”. Maybe this is our diction.  Thursday is our club’s day for working and we will need four or five people each Thursday.  Please let me know on Monday night if you can help. Check your diaries before the meeting.

Don’t forget two things.
  • Meeting on Monday 30th May at Auto Lodge with speaker. Please check your duties.
  • Let Sally 0274738554 or sallymorch@gmail.com if you are attending the social evening at Summerset on 6th June. The cost will be $8 as we are joining in with the residents’ Pizza evening.  If members can also bring a large plate of finger dessert.

Yours in Rotary

President Sally
Guest Speaker: David Hill- Author

The Guest speaker for the night was David Hill the well known, respected and local author of many books for the younger reader. He also is the author of numerous articles for various publications let alone items for a radio audience.

David based his talk around the three questions that he gets asked the most.

Why do you write?

Where do you get your material from?

How much do you get paid?

David, who has been awarded a MNZM, has been a full time writer for 40 years and found it far less stressful than teaching, his original occupation.

His first published item was in the Napier Boys High School magazine.

He really enjoys the freedom to work for himself at his own pace, and writes to pay his dues to his parents, aunt’s, uncles, family and friends.

David has a great, relaxed, easy way of speaking, and he paints a very good verbal picture with his story telling, about “Uncle Fred” with which he finished.

N.B. My thanks to Wally Garrett for providing the bulletin information- Bulletin Editor
