3 Minute Speaker: Murray Gillespie talked about highlights from a recent trip around the South Island. The stand out was seeing a Whale at Kaikoura.
Host : Own McCluggage introduced Myles Derry and Tayler Everett (future members of our club) talking about Canada.
Speaker :
Myles was born in The Yukon, Dawson City and Tayler in Calgary, Alberta.
The name "Canada" comes from "kanata," the Iroquois-Huron word for "village" or "settlement." The Iroquois used the word to describe the village of Stadacona, present-day
Quebec City.
It is surmised that Indigenous people probably arrived from Siberia 14000 years ago
90% of the current 39Million population of Canada resides very close to the Border with USA
Its 5500KM wide
2nd Largest country by area in the world after Russia.
Longest Highway in the World
10 Provinces and 3 Territories(Yukon is one of them)
John Cabot an Italian explorer was one of the first Europeans to claim The Atlantic Coast in The Name of King Henry V11 of England, while looking for an alternate way East from Europe to reach India.
There has always been a French influence(still today in Quebec).
In 1867 Canada gained indépendance from Britain.
Oil and gas, Mining, Fisheries and Agriculture are the main Industries.
There are 6 time zones
National sports Ice Hockey and Lacrosse
Myles was born in Dawson City (biggest Gold Rush in the world 1896) but schooled/University in Calgary
At age 13 he represented Canada in Under 15 World Ice Hockey Champs in Austria finished 3rd in the world.
He was a Rotary Youth Exchange Student in Brazil, southern tip of the Amazon rain forest 6.5 hours drive from Rio. Great experience particularly associating with the indigenous people
Qualified as a Petroleum Engineer and specialised in Pipeline robotics before moving to New Zealand.
Tayler grew up in Calgary (population 1.3 Million)
Her interests are in Hiking, Snowboarding and Horseback Riding
She has a BSC in Neuroscience
and a Masters gained in London Ontario
She has worked in The John Howard Society- a non Profit, Integrating people back into society after prison sentences.
Currently an Occupational Therapist.
We were truly privileged to have Myles and Tayler provide such an informative address as future members of our club. In thanking them Sally Morch commented that we learnt a lot more interesting facts about Canada than we'd known previously.

Cape Egmont Half Marathon. Sunday, 16th July - Jan reported that volunteers were still required. Let Jan know if you are available to assist.
Stephen Bovett mentioned that Des Friedrich is looking for Volunteers to help with The Tree Project(clearing weeds from trees planted) both for Tuesday May 23rd and mainly Sunday 28th 10.00- 12.00pm.

Someone to take over Harry Duynhoven's Guest Speaker Role let him know.
(Harry has speakers up to September, others in the pipeline and some ideas about companies we could visit)
He has spoken with Gareth Green: CEO NPDC who has suggested a number of projects mutually beneficial to Rotary and The NPDC.
