Guest Speaker: Graham Walker- Multiple Sclerosis

Introduced by Owen McCluggage who mentioned that our club had been involved with MS 20 years ago providing a support vehicle.

Graham was diagnosed with MS about 10 years ago at the age of 55.

Most people diagnosed lose their jobs and it can be very hard on relationships particularly if diagnosed at a young age.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). In MS, the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers and causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body.
It's a neurological condition where the nervous system attacks the body's immune system and effects joint mobility. There is no know cure for it but can be treated with drugs to help manage the condition.

Graham is currently the Taranaki president of MS as well as the national Vice President he is involved in at least 7 other charities. A naturally positive person, he feels better helping others, there is great peer support within the organisation and encourages anyone with the disease to joint MS Society. He has a University trained scientific background in agriculture and is a great advocate for this organisation.

He mentioned that he was one of 20 in New Zealand involved in a trial for the drug Ocrelizumab cost $60,000/year and has 2 doses each year. MRI scans have shown no progression of his condition which is very encouraging. While he has dexterity, ambulatory and fatigue issues the drug has enabled him to pursue an exercise regime that includes covering around 150 km per week on a conventional road bike.

Sally Morch in thanking Graham congratulated him for all the work he does both locally, nationally and Internationally to help others with MS and for taking time to come and talk to us.

P.S: See the article below that appeared in the Taranaki March MS newsletter. While the Bangers to Bluff Rally (Organised by The Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay) will not take place this year it will be happening in 2023 and coming through New Plymouth.
Well done Pat for your donation, you'll note that the car has the Rotary Logo on it.

House off Science:

From PP Sally Morch who has been involved in delivering Science Kits to Primary Schools in Taranaki designed to equip teachers with support material for teaching science.

It was agreed that the club would recommend support for the provision of at least one kit ($800.00 schools to pay) through the Club's Charitable Trust.
