Spoke about a new sport he has picked up: Pickle Ball.

Fastest growing sport in USA. Catching on in NZ there are national and regional tournaments.

Reputed to be named after the person who started the sport's dog: Pickles.

Played on a Badminton court with the net at tennis net height. Like patter tennis. Uses bats called paddles, and a tennis ball size plastic hollow ball with holes in it.

Serving is underarm ball must be hit with the hand below the wrist at the point of hitting ball with the paddle.

Message from President Sally

Greetings in Rotary

A brief note this week as it is a very busy week in Rotary.  A fulfilling night last Monday night at our Forum. A frank and honest discussion was held where everyone’s ideas were valued.  Thanks to all those who attended for your input.

On Thursday we have the morning tea thanking all the Rotary Readers who work in our schools.  Many of them are not Rotarians and therefore we must show them how much we value their help.  We will be discussing this programme in the new year and need to get more people on board to share the load.

Saturday will see our Rotary Club awarded a Team Service Recognition Award at the NPDC Chambers. This event is put on by Volunteer Taranaki yearly and we were nominated by the Cancer Society for helping them where they needed it.

Don’t forget our Christmas BBQ at Stephen’s next Monday and please let him know if you are coming and numbers please as soon as possible.

Everyone hone up your skills for the cake baking auction on 14th and this will be President’s Night, partners night and all proceeds will be going to a worthy cause.

Yours in Rotary

Sally

Forum Discussion:

 President Sally posed 2 questions:

1.0 What are your thoughts about promoting our club?

2.0 What could we or should we be doing?

Arising from the questions:

Key focus needs to be on attracting members
What we do and how and when we meet needs to be examined closely.
Maybe our hours are wrong particularly for busy people.
Meeting/meal/speaker/ go home?
Need to break away from tradition
Who are we trying to appeal to?
We've joined the Chamber of Commerce but we need to be seen at their Business after 5's
Need to promote Community, Networking and Leadership Development  skills we are able to offer potential members.
Think outside the square.
Corporate Membership could be an opportunity.
Movie nights for fundraisers.
Promotion of our Website and Facebook Page. Need members who are competent in this area to widen our appeal.
Draw up a list of vocations we need and potential names we could invite to a promotional evening as the Waitara club have done.
Need all members to be on Facebook to widen potential readership through friends.
Midweek/ Newspaper promotion of what we are doing.
More networking/community projects with other Rotary Clubs/  and invite clubs to meetings with interesting speakers. Club amalgamation?
Trailer raffle was good for club involvement and to be seen in the Community. Maybe we could run raffles in a different format that would involve everyone less onerously.
Do we want to have an image as raffle ticket sellers and sausage sizzlers in the Community?
Maybe concentrate more on Community service rather than fundraising.
Golf Tournament still worthwhile but not attracting members?
RYLA alumni could be an avenue to gain membership but the age for eligibilityto go to RYLA  needs to be extended to 30 possibly

Plenty of Food for thought for 2021.

General Business

David Lusk:

Reported on  the Garage sale for Pat and Chas Wilcox with everything sold. Still plenty of bargain hunters out there and a good time to be selling close to Christmas
