3 Minute Talk: Wally Garrett

Recently Wally discovered through Ancestry.com that his Great Great and Great Grandfather were buried in the Bolton St Cemetery in Wellington. His father and Grandfather were both Walter Garretts.
He handed round 2 wood carvings one a shield and the other a snake. These had been carved by Japanese prisoners using 6 inch nails (he has the nails too) at the internment camp in Featherston where his grandfather  was a serving army warden.

His grandfather Waler E Garrett had served in the 1st world war at Gallipoli and Pachendale where he was awarded a military medal for saving a fellow soldier.

He was a blacksmith and unfortunately lost his house in the depression, Wally's memory of him was as an 8 year old.

Focused on reflecting how things were when he joined Rotary over 30 years ago including that you had to be invited and only one person from a vocation could be a member.

Message from President Sally

Greetings in Rotary,

Another interesting speaker on Monday.  Mike Fabish took us through his career as a volunteer in various organisations. He has had many incredible experiences for someone so young. ( Compared to the rest of us in age that is.)

A huge thank you to those who have been helping out at the Forest of Peace and Remembrance.  I am sure the children will remember their experience thanks to everyone involved.  The weather forcast is not looking good for Thursday which is our next planting day.  Des will message me and I will send a message out so check your emails before leaving home in the morning.

Next Monday we will gather along with Summerset residents to enjoy pizza and drinks together.  Remember to try to have the correct cash with you.  $8 per person for pizza and $2 for beer and soft drinks and $4 for a glass of wine.  Of course if you want more than one glass factor that in.

Please bring a plate with finger food sweet for after the pizza.  We would like to try and have enough so the residents can enjoy these with us.  There will be about 60-70 residents so if we can have a plate per family that has at least 10-15 pieces on that should be great.

The bar will be open at 4pm and pizzas will be delivered at 5.30pm.

Yours in Rotary

Sally

Guest Speaker: Michael Fabish on the right pictured receiving the Charter for the Freedom of The City as the Commander of the NP Cadets

The Guest speaker for the night was Michael Fabish who has served for 22 years as a Volunteer Firemen, 30 years in the City of New Plymouth Cadet Unit, currently with the rank of Major. He also served 2 years in The Territorial Unit.

His passion is serving the community.

He still recalls when he joined Cubs the motto: To promise to do your best.

He started as a cadet when 14 in 1992, by age 17 he was a NCO leader training younger cadets.

Then he decide he wanted to do something different so became a Volunteer Fireman which enabled him to put into practice his training  unlike being a cadet.

He showed photos of some of the major fires he's attended and disaster relief when Tornado's have hit New Plymouth as well as major floods in Waitotara and Fordell.

80% of Firefighters are unpaid volunteers. Now expected to help in rescuing animals up trees and down wells, attend motor vehicle accidents and many other related incidents.

His proudest moment was being presented with a New Plymouth Citizens Award by Harry Duynhoven when Mayor, who mentioned in thanking Michael that he was the youngest to ever receive an award at the time.
